Some of the most beautiful man-made things in life were either produced with zeal and focus or simply by accident. Originally designed for the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, the famous Aj egg chair Germany, created by Danish designer and architect Arne Jacobsen is one iconic furniture piece that was simply an artistic masterpiece and now carries his name.
The egg chair, created in 1958, became an instant classic when it was released to the public. With its looks, its colors and the functionality that it shows are unique characteristics of their own. With their fluid lines, and imposing sculptural presence, made it two in a row for Jacobsen who also created another classic piece, the elegant “Swan chair”. Features The egg chair is supported by an extremely durable molded fiberglass shell and is padded with high-density foam and finished with a wool upholstery. The chair is mounted on a stainless steel base and has the capacity to swivel full circle (360 degrees). The chair can be tilted under the seat according to what the user wants. This tilt can be adjusted for the desired position of the seat. With his two creations, Jacobsen presented to the public both the striking aesthetic and of the era and their attention to practicality and comfort. In the words of a critic, Jacobsen designed furniture with both gravitas and groove. Not only did he represent himself and his era, he was also able to transcend it and made it timeless. The design and the designer The egg was designed for the lobby and reception areas of the famous Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The commission was to design every element of the hotel building as well as the furniture became an opportunity for Jacobsen to put his grand theories of integrated design and architecture into practice. The Egg is certainly one of his greatest triumphs in total design – a cultural contract to the building’s almost exclusively vertical and horizontal surfaces. The Egg was a culmination of a new technique which Jacobsen was the first to use – a strong foam inner shell underneath the upholstery. With his sculpture orientation, he was able to finally find the shell’s perfect shape in clay at home in his own garage. Today, the Egg is available in a wide variety of fabric upholstery, including leather, and is combined with a star-shaped base in satin polished aluminum. At the height of his powers, Jacobsen had been considered a paragon of Danish modernism. However, he was the least “Danish” of those of his peers and colleagues. Wagner, Juhl, Mogensen and others grew out of their studies as cabinetmakers. All prized skilled craftsmanship and all of their materials were carved, turned and joined wood. Since Jacobsen was first and foremost an architect, although he shared his colleagues’ devotion to quality of construction, he was far more open to other materials like metal and fiberglass. His many best-known pieces have their origins in architecture. However, the chair, aptly named Aj egg chair Germany, will live on and will carry his name for all time.
