Founded by Ulrich Schaerer in 1885 in Switzerland, USM began as a producer of iron works and window fittings. In the late 1940s, USM responded to the post-war economy by making product lines with metal and sheet metal work. The company took in a dramatic direction by transforming the large manual metal production plant into a modern industrial enterprise. Paul commissioned Fritz, a Swiss architect, to design the building with a modular architecture that eventually inspired Paul and Fritz to pioneer their Deutschland Modular Furniture as the USM Haller Systems. Today, USM has over 400 employees with an international network of flagship showrooms in Bern, Berlin, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, London, Munich, New York, Paris, Stuttgart, and Tokyo. The USM Haller System, the brand’s signature furniture, is composed of three main elements: the chrome ball, connecting tubes, and panels that come in a range of colors. The furniture embodies the company’s philosophy that form follows function.
A Deutschland Modular Furniture like the freestanding desk and storage solution for office or home, the Haller system is defined by its minimalist design and very precise proportions. The system can be built in any form, taken apart and reconfigured. It can also be customized per application by adding doors, drawers, a variety of internal organizer accessories, and modern technology equipment, including swing arms for telephones, monitors and computers, paper and wire management organizers. It’s like the Lego of furniture, say the owners of USM Furniture. Colorful blocks of modular furniture popped out in the clean white space of Silverlens Galleries in Pasong Tamo, the best way to bring out the simplicity and balance of the modular tables and shelves that would otherwise blend seamlessly in any interior setting. The gallery setting celebrates the iconic roots and classic design of the Swiss brand, with its collections displayed at the Museum of Modern Art, the Louvre, and the Cooper-Hewett National Design Museum. You just add on to it—change some panels and change the color, and it becomes a whole new piece. The main designer is Fritz Haller whose designs are just so smart and classic.” Buying USM furniture requires a whole new different perspective compared to buying ordinary furniture where you have to consider the measurements and see what fits the house and its interiors. With USM, the dimensions are variable and interchangeable, and are meant to adapt to every interior design. “It’s like the god of modular furniture,” Lorraine shares. USM is one of those brands that I have adored for many, many years. I have been a big fan of the modular concept of USM Modular Furniture for years and have been pinning their versatile pieces onto my interior inspiration board on Pinterest like crazy. When Patrick and me moved into our new home together last year, an USM shelf has been very high up our interior wish list. Sustainable, because when you buy USM furniture, you’re beginning a relationship that lasts a lifetime. Due to the many configurations USM offers, you have the possibility to change your furniture to your specific needs and can extend them whenever you want to. Versatile, because there are so many different purposes and rooms you can furnish with USM.

The key to a tidy, organized home is modular furniture – you want enough space so that you can hide away the things you don’t want to see every day. You still have a few areas where you can have your nicer objects and accessories out on display. There are clients who have been struggling with a common problem for many – small, compact, city spaces combined with a lack of adequate storage. It’s not that either of them had an overwhelming amount of stuff or no storage space at all, but that they didn’t have something that suited their unique needs and lifestyle. One size doesn’t always fit all – you might have rows and rows of books to order, records to keep in place, coats to hang or glassware and beautiful bottles to showcase. Every home is different and you need to make the best of what you’ve got, maximizing every inch so it works hard for you. What is needed is something that is adaptable, versatile and built for you.
But not everyone has the budget for custom-made furniture, whether that’s fitted cupboards or built-in shelves. That’s where modular furniture systems come in – the bespoke look but often for less. Often in endless configurations and colors. They’re great because you feel like you have some autonomy over the design, using standard pieces to create something that expresses your own style and personality. They’re also great for awkward spaces – I’m thinking sloping ceilings, tight hallways, narrow alcoves – because you can break up a storage system and use smaller units to fit around any constraints or quirks. I think we’re also seeing a lot of more Modular Furniture Deutschland systems because we’re living much more transient lives; renting, living in smaller spaces or moving from city to city. It’s much easier to deconstruct the components of a storage system and take it with you than something that is permanently attached to the wall. Storage should also be something that is built to last and adapts with you throughout your lifetime, so you can add units if you gain more stuff or change the configuration if your habits change. There are some really innovative designs out there, from budget to high-end – many using easy-fit snap mechanisms so they can be put together and dismantled multiple times in its lifetime. The spaces can be incredibly tricky for a few too many objects and they can start to look cluttered and cramped very quickly. It doesn’t take much. It’s a good balance between stuff and space and you need lots of good quality storage to hide things away. An enough room to have the items out that you need and some space left in between so that you can still get around everything. You would also want to give the eye some clear, resting space as too many things and you can start to feel a bit hemmed in. Flexible, Modular Furniture Deutschland systems are usually made up of different units, shelves, doors and components that can be combined and customized to fit your space. |
